At obé, we celebrate the incredible bond between members and daughters—plus all the ways they support and uplift each other. This Mother’s Day, we’re giving a special shoutout to two mother-daughter duos and the impact obé has had on their relationships and approach to fitness.
Meet Sara and Sally and Alicia and Patricia, two inspiring mother-daughter pairs who have discovered the power of obé. Empowering them to explore new class types, instructors, and challenges, obé has transformed how these mother-daughter move their bodies, ultimately leveling up their bond like never before.
It’s not just them, either. A study from the University of Utah found that women who work out with their daughters or mothers tend to move their bodies more consistently—with better physical results. Besides those perks, exercising with family (or a buddy) tends to make you more accountable, builds trust in the relationship, and increases quality time.
By sweating it out together, they find motivation and support to crush their goals! Through the joy of movement (and obéing together), these dynamic duos have become stronger and more active while creating new memories and having an absolute blast with every move. (Fun fact: Both these duos attended the 2023 obé Member Retreat!)
Tell us a little bit about yourselves!
Sara C. (daughter, 29, based in Burlington, VT, Supply Chain Manager) and Sally C. (mom, 62, based in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Retired Registered Nurse & Part-time Florist): We’re a mother-daughter duo who love being active, spending time outdoors, cooking, baking, gardening, musicals, and traveling with our family.
Alicia A. (daughter, 41, based in Colorado, Bartender & Marketer) and Patricia B. (mom, 62, based in Colorado, Development Coordinator): We are a very close mother-daughter duo—and very strong Leos! Patricia is 1 of 7, and she went into labor on her 21st birthday to give birth to Alicia, an only child. From Jane Fonda videos to running outside in Boulder, Colorado, Patricia (mom) has shown Alicia (daughter) the importance of fitness from a young age.
Patricia is also a very talented belly dancer, and we’ve done Bikram yoga together, along with Breast cancer runs. Patricia is a breast cancer survivor—and Alicia a previvor. We’re both BRCA 2 positive, and after Patricia’s treatment, Alicia decided to have a preventative double mastectomy in 2021.
How (and when) did you start your fitness journey with obé? Who was hooked on obé first?
Sara and Sally: It was Sally (mom) who got us hooked! She was a super early obé adopter in 2018, thanks to the Instagram influence of the lovely Katie Lee Biegel (shoutout to Katie, we love you!). Over the years, Sally tried all the different workout video trends. From day one, she was all in on obé and knew it was something different. Sara—who questioned whether obé would be “hard enough”—tried her first Power class at Sally’s insistence and was quickly humbled (and obsessed). We’ve been going strong ever since!
Alicia and Patricia: Alicia first found obé in July 2019 after wanting more time options than what her local studio had to offer—and has fallen more and more in love with it every year. Her mom joined in November of 2021.
What have you learned from each other through obéing together?
Sara: I’ve learned that my mom is a bada**! Seeing her crush it into her 60s is incredibly impressive to me. And she always encourages me to try something new.
Sally: I am inspired by Sara’s determination and overall dedication to a healthful lifestyle. Plus, she makes everything more fun!
Alicia and Patricia: We have learned how to support each other in our journey. If one of us is falling off the workout wagon the other will jump in and suggest a workout for the day. We have also learned that it’s not just about cardio—Sculpt and Strength are just as important. And also our rest days and stretching!
How has obé changed your approach to fitness and your relationship?
Sara and Sally: obé really is “enter-train-ment.” It provides variety, empowerment, and an element of joy to working out. Sara (daughter) is a runner and cyclist who finds fulfillment in competitive pursuits like marathoning. Sally is drawn to an active lifestyle from a more holistic point of view, not driven by competition. obé has been a connector between those two mindsets, providing something for both of us. We have always been close, but having something we both enjoy doing and talking about is a fun way to bring us together now that we don’t live under the same roof. We talk about obé the way the other members of our family talk about the NBA!
Alicia and Patricia: obéing together gives us another bond and activity to do as mother-daughter. We are both very busy, so we tend to obé in our own homes and call each other to share what we thought and how we want to improve.
Any tips or advice for other mother-daughter duos?
Sara and Sally: Encourage each other and have fun with it! Working out does NOT need to be serious or intimidating. It can literally be dancing in your living room. Having a workout buddy, whether you’re in the same place geographically or not, makes you feel like you’re accomplishing something together. Everyone has different strengths and preferences, so teaming up might help you discover a new way to move that you never would have tried on your own!
Alicia and Patricia: We love doing anything together, so adding fitness brings some accountability and fun. I (Alicia) always say: Do as much with your mother as you can. My dad has also done obé with us—so it’s just a family affair.
Go-to class types:
Sara: Strength, Power, Pilates, Yoga, Endurance
Sally: Strength, Power, Step, Boxing, Sculpt
Alicia: Dance Cardio and Sculpt, but I do a wide variety.
Patricia: Step and Yoga Sculpt. I love to do the same classes and perfect the routine.
Go-to instructors:
Sara and Sally: Mary W., Ana C., Calvin M., Lulu S., David P., Kathryn A., Alex S… actually, can we just pull up the full instructor list on the website? We love all our children equally.
Alicia: My top current instructor is Sam G., but Mary W., Alex S., Alex C., Ana C., Beth C., and Spencer J. are all on the top of my weekly playlist as well. Honestly, it’s hard to decide. I love all of them for different moods and reasons, which is why obé is the best.
Patricia: Kathryn A., Beth C., and I love David P.’s boxing classes as well!
Favorite shared obé memory? Coolest place you’ve taken obé together?
Sara and Sally: Aside from the 2020 retreat, our favorite memory is our standing appointment for Power Hour with Kat every Saturday morning during Spring 2020. Sara was home in Pennsylvania for several months at the beginning of the pandemic, and having little events to look forward to brought some much-needed joy and structure to those weird times! We even got other family members involved.
We recently brought obé with us on our family vacation last Christmas—opting for a Mary Wolff Pilates class in our vacation home rental overlooking Lake Tahoe. That was pretty sweet!
Alicia and Patricia: This trip to NYC for the obé Member Retreat will be one of our coolest memories together by far, and we are very excited to take it all in!
Is the 2023 obé Member Retreat your first IRL obé experience together?
Sara and Sally: We still reminisce about one of the best weekends ever: attending the obé retreat in early 2020 before the world shut down. We had a blast meeting the instructors, other members, and co-Founders Mark & Ashley. We got on speakerphone when the 2023 tickets were released to make sure we got them before they sold out.
Alicia and Patricia: This will be our first obé event together, as well as both of our first times in New York.
